Welcome to Mindfulness-Based Inner RePatterning™ (MBIR™)
Mindfulness-Based Inner RePatterning™ (MBIR™) is a gentle, present-moment, energy psychology approach created by Tania A. Prince.
MBIR™ was developed to support emotional regulation, nervous system safety, and inner change without the need to analyse problems, relive past experiences, or verbally describe traumatic events in detail.
This page provides an overview of MBIR™ – what it is, how it works at a principle level, and how it is applied — whether you are seeking personal support or exploring MBIR™ as a practitioner.
What Is MBIR™?

Mindfulness-Based Inner RePatterning™ is built on safety, present-moment awareness, and nervous-system-led regulation. Change is supported through relational co-regulation and coherence, allowing natural re-patterning to emerge without force or analysis.
MBIR™ is a mindfulness-based approach that works with awareness, the body, and the energy system to support natural re-patterning.
Rather than focusing on identifying or analysing problems, MBIR™ prioritises establishing safety and regulation in the present moment, allowing the system to shift without force, effort, or emotional overwhelm.
MBIR™ integrates:
- Present-moment awareness
- Gentle energy psychology processes
- Nervous-system-informed stabilisation
- Relational co-regulation
- Non-analytical, non-judgemental allowing
This makes MBIR™ particularly suitable for trauma-informed work, shame, emotional overwhelm, and situations where talking or analysis feels unhelpful or unsafe.
How MBIR™ Works (Overview)
MBIR™ works by supporting the internal state first, rather than attempting to change thoughts, emotions, or memories directly.
Safety and a positive intention for the session are established at the outset. Awareness is then gently brought to how an issue is experienced in the present moment — for example through images, thoughts, bodily sensations, or emotional tone — without analysis or interpretation.
The therapist remains actively present throughout, using attuned language, pacing, and guidance to support co-regulation. Clients are invited to share what they notice as it is happening, rather than explaining or making sense of it.
Breath, softening of vision, and heart-based processes are used to support regulation, coherence, and integration. The process is iterative and nervous-system-led, allowing awareness to return to the original experience once safety and coherence are present, and repeated gently if needed.
At all times, pacing is guided by the client’s nervous system, with no pressure for experiences to change or resolve.
Awareness Without Analysis
MBIR™ does not require analysing, interpreting, or reliving experiences.
While awareness may include internal images, thoughts, sensations, or feelings — sometimes described in NLP as the language of the mind — these are simply noticed and allowed, without judgement or criticism.
This approach helps prevent cognitive overload, emotional flooding, or re-activation of survival responses, supporting change through regulation rather than effort.

MBIR™ and the Nervous System
MBIR™ is designed to work with the nervous system rather than overriding it.
When the nervous system perceives threat — even subtle emotional threat — it prioritises protection over healing or integration. MBIR™ supports:
- Reduction of sympathetic activation
- Parasympathetic settling
- Felt safety in the present moment
This allows experiences to shift naturally, without force or pressure.

MBIR™ as a Trauma-Informed Approach
MBIR™ is inherently trauma-informed because it:
- Does not require trauma disclosure
- Avoids re-telling or reliving painful experiences
- Respects protective responses and adaptations
- Works at the pace of the nervous system
- Emphasises safety before change

MBIR™ and Parts-Based Awareness
MBIR™ supports parts-based awareness through regulation and allowing, rather than dialogue, interrogation, or analysis.
Protective or vulnerable experiences are met with presence and safety, creating the conditions for integration without pressure or internal conflict.
