What Makes MBIR™️ Different From Other Therapeutic Approaches?

What Makes MBIR™️ Different From Other Therapeutic Approaches? — Tania A Prince

Mindfulness-Based Inner RePatterning™️ (MBIR™️) is a therapeutic approach developed by Tania A Prince that works with present-moment internal experience, nervous-system states, unconscious patterns and the way the mind and body organise experience.

Although MBIR™️ draws upon principles that may be familiar to practitioners from mindfulness, nervous-system-informed work, NLP, hypnotherapy and other therapeutic approaches, it is not simply a collection of techniques taken from these fields.

It has its own underlying principles, processes and way of working.

One of the most important differences is that MBIR™️ does not begin with the assumption that a person needs to repeatedly revisit, analyse or tell the story of a difficult experience in order for change to occur.

Instead, the work is often centred on what is happening within the person now.

What Is MBIR™️?

MBIR™️ stands for Mindfulness-Based Inner RePatterning™️.

It is an approach that uses mindful awareness of present-moment internal experience to identify and work with patterns held within the person’s internal system.

Rather than focusing primarily on the conscious explanation for a problem, MBIR™️ pays attention to what the system is actually doing.

This may include changes in sensation, emotion, imagery, internal dialogue, attention, posture, breathing, impulses, nervous-system activation or shutdown, and the responses of different parts of the person.

These responses can provide important information about how an experience is being organised internally.

The aim is not simply to understand the pattern intellectually. The work is directed towards creating the conditions in which the system can reorganise and a different response can become possible.

The Story Is Not Always the Starting Point

Many therapeutic approaches place considerable emphasis on talking about what happened, understanding why it happened or exploring the meaning of past experiences.

Those things can sometimes be valuable.

MBIR™️, however, does not require the story to be the central focus of the work.

A person may know exactly why they feel the way they do and still experience the same automatic response.

They may also have very little conscious understanding of why a particular situation triggers them.

MBIR™️ can work with what becomes apparent in the present moment without requiring the person to have a complete intellectual explanation for it.

This distinction is important.

Knowing why a pattern exists and changing the pattern are not necessarily the same process.

Working With the Person’s Present-Moment Experience

A fundamental part of MBIR™️ is learning to notice what is occurring as it happens.

Rather than immediately trying to change an uncomfortable sensation or emotion, the practitioner can help the person develop awareness of it.

Where is it experienced?

Does it have movement?

Does it change when attention is brought to it?

What happens elsewhere in the system?

Does an image, thought, memory or impulse emerge?

Does another response appear?

This is not observation for its own sake.

Present-moment awareness gives the practitioner and client access to information that can easily be missed when the conversation remains predominantly at the level of conscious thought.

MBIR™️ and Mindfulness

The word mindfulness is central to Mindfulness-Based Inner RePatterning™️.

However, MBIR™️ is not simply a mindfulness or meditation practice.

Mindful awareness is used therapeutically.

The person learns to observe aspects of their internal experience with greater awareness, rather than automatically becoming caught within them or immediately attempting to suppress them.

That creates an opportunity to notice patterns that may previously have operated outside conscious awareness.

The practitioner is also using their own observational skills throughout the process, noticing subtle shifts in the person as the work unfolds.

MBIR™️ and Nervous-System States

MBIR™️ recognises that human responses are not purely cognitive.

A person can consciously know that they are safe while their body continues to respond as though danger is present.

They may become highly activated, anxious or vigilant. Alternatively, their system may move towards freezing, collapse, numbness or disconnection.

Trying to reason a person out of an automatic protective response may therefore have limited effect.

MBIR™️ works with an awareness of these changing physiological and nervous-system states rather than treating them simply as unwanted symptoms.

The state of the system matters.

This is one reason establishing and accessing resourceful states, including the Safe State, is an important element within MBIR™️.

The Safe State

The Safe State is more than relaxation.

Within MBIR™️, it provides a resource that can be accessed and strengthened so that the person has an internal reference point associated with safety and regulation.

This can become particularly important when working with patterns associated with threat, overwhelm or previous difficult experiences.

Rather than assuming that the person should simply tolerate increasing levels of distress, the practitioner pays attention to the person’s capacity to remain present and works accordingly.

Working With Parts

Another important element of MBIR™️ is its recognition that people can experience apparently conflicting internal responses.

One part of a person may consciously want change while another response appears to resist it.

For example, someone may genuinely want greater confidence while simultaneously experiencing fear when they imagine becoming more visible.

Rather than treating this as irrationality or self-sabotage, MBIR™️ can approach the conflicting response as meaningful.

The MBIR™️ Parts Model provides a way of working with these internal responses and exploring what they may be attempting to achieve or prevent.

Resistance therefore becomes information rather than something that has to be forced out of the way.

The Practitioner Does Not Impose the Answer

An important principle within MBIR™️ is that the practitioner does not need to decide in advance what the client’s internal experience means.

A sensation does not automatically have one meaning.

An image does not necessarily symbolise what the practitioner thinks it symbolises.

A protective response is not automatically a problem that needs to be eliminated.

The practitioner facilitates a process through which the person’s own system can reveal relevant information.

This reduces the temptation to impose interpretations upon the client and allows the work to remain closely connected to their subjective experience.

Sensory Acuity Is Important

MBIR™️ practitioners are trained to pay close attention to subtle changes.

These might include changes in breathing, facial expression, skin tone, posture, voice, movement, eye focus or other observable responses.

A small change can sometimes indicate that something significant has shifted internally before the person has consciously put that change into words.

This makes sensory acuity an important practitioner skill within MBIR™️.

The practitioner is not merely listening to the client’s words. They are paying attention to the wider communication occurring throughout the person’s system.

Change Does Not Have to Mean Forcing a Positive State

There can be a temptation within change work to replace an uncomfortable experience with a positive one as quickly as possible.

MBIR™️ takes a more nuanced approach.

An uncomfortable response may have a function.

Fear may be protective. Resistance may be attempting to prevent something. Numbness may have developed when feeling became overwhelming.

Trying to override these responses without understanding the wider system can miss important information.

MBIR™️ therefore works with what emerges rather than assuming from the outset what the person should be experiencing.

Positive and resourceful states can be developed and strengthened, but they are not used simply to deny or suppress what is already present.

The Feedback Loop

MBIR™️ is responsive rather than rigidly scripted.

The practitioner does something, observes what happens and uses that information to determine what happens next.

This creates an ongoing feedback loop.

The person’s response guides the process.

If something changes, that change becomes information. If nothing changes, that is also information.

The practitioner therefore does not need to force the client through a predetermined sequence irrespective of how their system is responding.

This makes the process highly individual.

How Is MBIR™️ Different From Talking Therapy?

Talking is certainly used within MBIR™️, but talking alone is not necessarily the mechanism through which change occurs.

A conventional talking approach may place greater emphasis on discussing experiences, identifying thoughts, exploring relationships or developing conscious insight.

MBIR™️ can include conversation and insight, but attention is also directed towards the person’s immediate internal response.

The question is not only:

“What do you think about this?”

It may also be:

“What happens inside when you bring your awareness to it?”

That shift can reveal a very different level of information.

How Is MBIR™️ Different From EFT?

I developed MBIR™️ after many years of working extensively with Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) and other approaches.

EFT and MBIR™️ are distinct methods.

EFT characteristically uses tapping on specific acupoints while working with an emotional, physical or cognitive issue.

MBIR™️ does not depend upon tapping.

Instead, it uses its own processes for working with internal experience, states, patterns, parts and the feedback occurring within the person’s system.

Practitioners who already have experience with EFT may recognise some shared therapeutic principles, particularly the importance of working experientially rather than relying entirely on intellectual discussion. However, MBIR™️ should not be understood simply as EFT without tapping.

It is a separate therapeutic model.

How Is MBIR™️ Different From NLP and Hypnotherapy?

My background in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and hypnotherapy has inevitably influenced the development of my work.

MBIR™️ shares an appreciation of unconscious processing, internal representation, sensory information, language and state.

However, MBIR™️ has developed its own framework and processes.

Rather than being an NLP or hypnotherapy protocol under another name, it brings together decades of clinical observation and therapeutic experience into a distinct model of working.

A Different Relationship With the Problem

Perhaps one of the most important distinctions within MBIR™️ is the relationship it encourages people to develop with their internal responses.

Instead of immediately asking:

“How do we get rid of this?”

we can become curious about:

“What is happening here?”

That is a very different starting point.

Anxiety, resistance, numbness, tension or another response may cease to be viewed simply as an enemy.

It becomes information.

And once the system is listened to differently, possibilities for change can emerge that may not have been available while the person was fighting against their own response.

MBIR™️ begins with curiosity by asking what is happening here rather than how do we get rid of this

MBIR™️ Is a Process, Not a Script

MBIR™️ is not designed as a collection of phrases that practitioners apply mechanically.

Practitioner skill matters.

The practitioner needs to be able to observe, remain present, recognise changes in state, work with what emerges and know when to continue, when to change direction and when not to intervene.

Sometimes the most appropriate intervention is very small.

At other times, allowing the person sufficient space for their own internal processing can be more useful than filling that space with questions.

The practitioner facilitates the process rather than dominating it.

What Ultimately Makes MBIR™️ Different?

No single element defines MBIR™️ in isolation.

Its distinctiveness comes from the way these elements operate together within a coherent therapeutic model.

MBIR™️ combines mindful present-moment awareness with close attention to internal experience, nervous-system state, sensory information, unconscious patterns, parts, resource states and continuous feedback.

It does not assume that change requires repeatedly retelling the past.

It does not assume that every uncomfortable response needs to be removed.

It does not assume that the practitioner knows what an experience means before the client’s system reveals it.

And it does not reduce therapeutic change to conscious understanding alone.

Instead, MBIR™️ provides a way of listening to and working with the person’s internal system as it responds in the present moment.

That is at the heart of Mindfulness-Based Inner RePatterning™️.
